LED flat goes under spotlight

A consultancy claimed this week to have designed the world’s first apartment solely lit by LEDs (light emitting diodes) – and said that it could change your sex life.

Vos International Design will soon be exhibiting the Vos Pad, a one bedroom flat in Fulham, south west London, which uses more than 120 LED fittings embedded in the apartment’s floor and fittings.

Hundreds… of tiny energy-saving lights have been embedded into perspex kitchen counters and the shower cubicle, and have been integrated into the limestone floor so overhead lighting and standard lamps are not required. Lightness and colour can be controlled by a custom-built computerised system developed by US firm Lutron technology.

Marcel Jean Vos, designer and chief executive of Vos International Design, who has been designing with LEDs for some time, said that in spite of LEDs being on the market for 40 years it has only been in the last few years that the lights have really taken off in the UK.

He added that he hoped that architects would now take notice of what can be done with LEDs.

“ The Vos Pad has been done out of frustration; a lot of designers don’t have a clue about lighting and how to design with it” said Vos. “LEDs can change your sex life, the colours created are so different. They also have a long lifespan, between 20,000 and 100,000 hours, when compared with the average lightbulb. They are fantastic for integrating into furniture as LEDs don’t get hot.” Vos predicts that within the next two years that “LEDs will be everywhere”.

The apartment is being exhibited to developers and architects on May 29th.
