Light Emitting Diodes (LED's) are complex semiconductors
that convert an electrical current into light.
LED's have
been used for over 40 years in indicators, displays
and as light sources for instrumentation and engineering
applications.
Recent
technological developments and economies of scale
have meant that LED's are now
brighter, cheaper and easier to use than ever
before, and are now being used in place of more
conventional light sources.
A
good quality white light LED produces
two to three times more light than an equivalent
wattage low energy light bulb, and ten times more
light than the common incandescent light bulb.
LED lights have an exceptionally
long life over 50,000 hours. 1000% longer than
low energy light bulb and 10 000% longer than
the common incandescent light bulb.
